Chelsea:
I never got there but I know that the anatomy teacher from Madurai goes up there to teach and one of the kitchen staff goes up there. I hear the swami is good up there. I had a friend stay there for two weeks and said it was absolutely lovely and very quiet. They cap the TTC at 30 students (it is much smaller ashram than Madurai) so that is a big plus. you won't have to worry about the heat as much either in the high summer as it is higher up in the mtns. Hope that helps. Julia

Thank you all for your very informative feedback! I wonder if anyone has any insight on the Sivananda Katir Uttarkashi Ashram in the Himalayas and how this might compare to Madurai? I am deciding which ashram to take the TTC for the summer of 2010.

Hi there,
Your blog is very interesting and you made some great points. However, I would like to add that it really does depend on what time of year you attend Neyyar Dam. Ofcourse, we know it is their biggest ashram in india and attracts huge numbers of people during the high season (Oct-april) so it really is to be expected that you would find Madurai more friendly/intimate etc.

I have attended Neyyar Dam twice in 2 months during low season and both times there were less than 60 people in the whole ashram. Swami Sivaswaroopananda is excellent and gave inspiring and interesting lectures and satsangs, and also made himself available at several opportunities throughout each day.

There was always an abundance of food, with no one queueing and i certainly saw no one slurping buttermilk from their plate! If anyone is running late due to karma yoga or treatments the kitchen is always open for people to eat whenever they need.

I saw no one talking/sleeping/homeworking during satsangs and i found the permanent staff there to be very inspiring, supportive and helpful. They also "hang out" with the students and are genuinely interested in helping us to learn in whatever way they can.

I think people must take into account that attending Neyyar Dam in high season will inevitabley be a very different experience to attending in low season or attending one of their smaller ashrams. It's not really fair to compare as during high season Neyyar Dam is trying to accomodate as many people as they can so the learning can be open to all, as with anything, when it is stretched to its limit there will always have to be compromises. That doesnt mean that the staff are not friendly and the swamis not inspiring, rather that with there being so many people there its just not possible to offer the intimacy one would get at a smaller ashram. i have found my yoga vacations to Neyyar Dam to be very spiritually uplifting and inspiring.

I agree. Madurai is a wonderful place to study. The atmosphere is peaceful and devotional. Swami Govindananda is a wonderful teacher. I will go back there as soon as I get a chance.

om namah sivaya
first of all it was good to remember through your blog all the great things we were lucky to have and expirience during the TTC in madurai
not a day passes without thinking about it and somtimes i even conculate the hours to find out what theyr doing right now (now for example is middle of veening satsang:) )
as much as i loved the course from the very first day and didnt have any thaught of what i might have miss by choosing madurai over neyyr dam, i didnt apriciated it enough until i crossed information with a TTC graduat from neyyar dam.
it suported everything u said and more.
but i think its also a matter of charictor - some people like the varied of people and the "lot thats going on"
as for me, whom never been in an ashram before in my life and havnt done any inquieries of any kind before, i was lucky (or perhaps now i should use the words "good karma") to be in the exect time and place and i thank for it every single day.
for those who are wondering, according to what swami ji told me, 120 studants will be the maximum amount hell agree to eccept for a course.
i trust him and his attitude, that hell handle this amount of students with the same careness and effection and efficiency he handled our 68 students course
highly recomanded to come to meenakshi ashram in madurai for a really "once in a lifetime expirience"
